This weekend in celebration of Chris’ birthday we headed south in the van and he got to choose the excursions …
Bodmin Jail was built in 1779 and saw 60 executions before it closed in 1927. The entrance to the jail is through a lush, bright, luxurious bar where you purchase your tickets before stepping through into a completely different environment. As soon as you walk through the door from the bar you can feel the drop in temperature and sense a foreboding atmosphere.
I don’t have many pictures, and I am really not sure those I have properly convey the feeling I had in the building. From the moment of entering the jail proper I felt as though something horrible was sneaking up behind me (and Chris was in front of me). It took a while before I gathered myself enough to think to get the camera out!
The camera in hand was something of a comfort blanket, but I was still far more restrained than normal. The information provided throughout is fascinating and educational, and Chris thought the whole thing was awesome, but I must admit my favourite part of the day was the relief I felt when we escaped!
